Paul Ramsey was one of the most prominent writers on just war in the 20th century. An <\/span>eminent moral theologian in the Methodist tradition, Ramsey\u2019s contribution makes use <\/span>of Saint Augustine\u2019s writings in unexpected ways. Often controversial and sometimes <\/span>even polemical in style, Ramsey\u2019s writings depart from the traditionally developed <\/span>just war principles. Choosing not to draw on Augustine\u2019s just war writings, Ramsey <\/span>instead bases his moral theology around the concept of agape<\/i>, arguing that the use <\/span>of force is sometimes the most loving action to protect the innocent. Through his doctoral <\/span>supervisor, H. Richard Niebuhr, Ramsey came to appreciate the \u2018conversionist\u2019 or <\/span>\u2018transformist\u2019 strand of Augustine\u2019s thinking, itself based on agape<\/i>, and through the <\/span>influence of H. Richard\u2019s brother, Reinhold, Ramsey espoused an Augustinian political realism which greatly affected his theological perspective.\u00a0<\/span>This thesis therefore traces\u00a0<\/span>these<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Rev Dr Cameron Forbes<\/strong> is a priest of the Archdiocese of Melbourne and Head of the <\/span>Department of Moral Theology and Canon Law at Catholic Theological College, part of <\/span>the University of Divinity (Australia). He completed a licentiate and doctorate in moral <\/span>theology at the Alphonsianum Academy in Rome. In addition to the just war principles, <\/span>he is presently pursuing research relating to friendship and social media, and business <\/span>ethics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He currently lectures in the areas of Catholic Social Teaching, issues relating to war and <\/span>peace, and Christian perspectives on business ethics. He has also previously taught in <\/span>the areas of fundamental moral theology and human sexuality. Before training for the <\/span>priesthood he earned degrees in law and arts and is also qualified in church music. <\/span>In addition to his academic pursuits, he is presently parish priest of Mentone-Parkdale <\/span>in Melbourne and chaplain to the Melbourne Catholic Lawyers Association.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
