The article concisely presents the context in which the 1963 encyclical Pacem in terris was born. In particular, it dwells on the position of the Pontiffs, starting with Benedict XV, and of Catholics, especially Italians, in the face of the wars that tragically marked the first half of the 20th century: the Great War, the Second World War, and the so-called “Cold War”. In this context, John XXIII’s encyclical appears as the culmination of a process that embraces the underlying reasons of pacifist thought and constitutes an authoritative response to the expectations of many, both individuals and peoples.

El artículo presenta de forma concisa el contexto en el que nació la encíclica Pacem in terris de 1963. En particular, se detiene en la posición de los Pontífices, empezando por Benedicto XV, y de los católicos, especialmente italianos, ante las guerras que marcaron trágicamente la primera mitad del siglo XX: la Gran Guerra, la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la llamada “Guerra Fría”. En este contexto, la encíclica de Juan XXIII aparece como la culminación de un proceso que recoge las razones de fondo del pensamiento pacifista y constituye una respuesta autorizada a las expectativas de muchos, tanto personas como pueblos.

L’articolo presenta in modo sintetico il contesto in cui nasce l’enciclica Pacem in terris del 1963. In particolare si sofferma sulla posizione dei Pontefici, a partire da Benedetto XV, e dei cattolici, soprattutto italiani, di fronte alle guerre che hanno tragicamente segnato la prima metà del Novecento: la Grande guerra, la II guerra mondiale, la cosiddetta “guerra fredda”. In questo contesto, l’enciclica di Giovanni XXIII appare come il culmine di un processo che accoglie le ragioni di fondo del pensiero pacifista e costituisce un’autorevole risposta alle attese di molti, sia singoli sia popoli.
